3 Plastics You Should NEVER USE

Dr. Leonardo Trasande gives us Plastics Leaching 101 in this short 3 minute video. Dr. Leo explains what plastics we need to avoid and why as well as the health effects of ingesting food contained in these plastics and how to avoid them.

ALWAYS AVOID plastics numbers 3, 6, and 7

#3 - phthalates

#6 - styrene (a known carcinogen)

#7 - bisphenols (used in aluminium cans) makes fat cells bigger, disrupts the function of the protein that protects the heart, and it's a synthetic estrogen so can have sex-specific effects on body mass. More exposure to bisphenol, more likelihood of obesity.

BPA- FREE is worse than greenwashing, it's misleading us to think we are safe, yet the bisphenols that are replacing the Bisphenol A are toxic to embryos and all life!

Here are some top tips:

Teflon-like, non-stick chemicals are forever chemicals called "PFAS" chemicals that hack our hormones. AVOID THESE. One study looked at folks who were trying to lose weight were found that the higher the PFAS chemicals in the body, the faster they gained the weight back they were trying to lose and found these chemicals to be associated with slowing metabolism.

AVOID microwaving plastic!

AVOID canned food!

AVOID non-stick pans!

AVOID machine dishwashing plastic!

Dr. Leo Trasande is a Medical Doctor--Pediatrician, to be specific--, concerned father, and author of Sicker, Fatter, Poorer. He has been witnessing the health impacts caused by over-exposure to plastics on his young patients. Not kids who grow up in nylon factories or picking plastic out of dumps or kids that help their parents at their recycling jobs or kids that live in plastic brick houses--just regular American kids. Kids exposed to plastic on a daily, hourly, minute-by-minute basis through their toys, food packaging, clothing, blankets, etc.

As Dr. Trasande looked into the health problems resulting from all this plastic, it became apparent that not just kids were suffering. The analysis of the impacts reached beyond our health. The economy was suffering.

Why?

As a result of our collective plastics-addiction, Americans have been gradually getting fatter, more depressed, and the average IQ continues to drop. Meaning people are not able to make as much money.

Pour yourself a bath, make a relaxing loose-leaf chamomile tea, and book in a massage for later--because, this might be ultra triggering for you and I don't want to leave you to wallow in your plastic-trauma unsupported. During these trying environmental times, it’s so important to practice self-care and make lots of time for regeneration.

Interview from the Unwrapped Conference put on by Upstream Solutions that happened in June 2019.
