First, find a cute glass bottle. Cutness is important, so you have an adorable plastic free bathroom and are proud to display your plastic free hygiene items, so that bathroom visitors inquire and you can share the knowledge! If all you have is plastic, BY ALL MEANS REUSE THIS CONTAINER! I do not discriminate (too much) on what container you use, I merely encourage finding a bottle you love because there are many glass bottles with amazing shapes and stoppers in abundance at all the thrift shops.

Next fill your bottle with distilled or highly filtered water.

Finally, pop in two drops of organic, food grade peppermint oil for minty fresh feels and two drops of tea tree oil for germ-bashing mouth disinfectant.

VOILA!

Shake, swish, and spit.

Mouthwash

WHAT EVEN IS THE PURPOSE OF MOUTHWASH, EVEN!?

Brushing removes most food, bacteria and plaque from the surface of your teeth. Flossing gets in between your teeth (where your brush can’t reach). The metal triangles called "tongue scrapers" do just that, scrape your tongue clean! Imagine!

But what’s the deal with rinsing your mouth?

FUN DENTAL FACT: Saliva is our body's very own organic, natural, plastic free mouthwash. It helps rinse away bacteria that can cause bad breath and gingivitis in the mouth. COOL! Thanks, bod!

EVEN MORE SIMPLE THAN OILS

SALT WATER
If you don't have peppermint or tea tree, simply rinse and spit with saltwater. Saltwater is an excellent short term treatment, especially if you have wounds in your mouth! Like you bit your cheek when hungrily attacking a burrito or you tongue-kissed a babe with braces and have a few lusty mouth wounds.

Salt acts as a natural disinfectant and also removes any swelling from the tissues. Long term use of a saltwater mouth rinse is not recommended as it could lead to tooth erosion by eating away and softening the tooth enamel and making your teeth more susceptible to chipping and cavities.

ALOE MOUTHWASH

  • 1/4 CUP of Aloe Vera goop scooped from 3 Medium Leaves (from backyard plant! or go foraging through the neighbourhood)
  • 1 CUP of Distilled Water
  • 2 TSP of Baking Soda
  • OPTIONAL to add 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil for a fresh minty taste and/or 2-3 drops tea tree oil for disinfectant. (If you add oil, be sure to shake well before use.)

Place all in blender and blend it on high for about a minute and then strain it through your nut milk bag or a fine mesh sieve. This will keep any of the viscous plant matter out of your mouth wash.

Shake, swish, SPIT!
