What we can do TODAY to help the REEF:

My housemate is an environmental lawyer and he is constantly asking me when I plan to see the reef, because it won't be there for long. HOW DEPRESSING! The Great Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world! Marine scientists have concluded93% of the Reef is bleached and the entire system has reached a critical tipping point. However, there is still heaps we can do to save what is left and help restore the reef's health. From small changes in our lives to big steps to push our government to be accountable for this betrayal of the traditional land owners.

Here are 5 things you can do THIS WEEK to help our Great Barrier Reef:

In short, share this info, use less coal power, support the traditional owners where the mine is set to be built, write letters to the governments & banks (read more about how this works!), sign the petition. SCROLL DOWN for DETAILS.

1. Read all of these, do some or all of these, and SHARE THIS INFO. It is a huge help to spread the awareness, but also to share the ACTION steps!

2. HELP THE MOVEMENT AWAY FROM COAL:
Switch your energy provider to a local, community-owned renewable energy company with genuine environmental credentials! Keep jobs and profits in the community! Reduce carbon emissions and support local efforts! Byron People, switch to Enova Community Energy It's YOUR Energy Company
Use less power! Remind your housemates and family members to turn off lights, use the "eco" settings for washing machines & dishwashers. Invest in energy efficient light bulbs & appliances--this will save you $ down the line. Take shorter showers or shower with friends! Make wood fires for warmth or cuddle! Bicycle more. Walk more. Use less plastic. Reuse, Recycle. Buy local. Get creative & lessen your impact in any way. Australia's population continues to grow, but the energy use is going down due to growing awareness.

3. SUPPORT THE TRADITIONAL LAND OWNERS AT THE MINE SITE:
Send donations to the Wangan + Jagalingou Traditional land owners whose land Malcolm Turnbull is blatently agreeing to betray and destroy for a dying coal industry--showing that the apologies by Australian Government to feel sorry for the past pillaging and the claims to respect indigenous land and people are quickly sacrificed for the right dollar. DESPICABLE!

4. WRITE A LETTER TO GOV & BANKS: We are watching the big banks (led by Westpac) DE-VESTING their $ in coal mining, which means that public opinion has spoken, has been heard, and MATTERS to the powers that be. The more physical letters and individual emails we send, the more they will get the message. Persistence. Keep it positive and solution oriented. (Sample letters posted in comments)
