I admit I have become a bit jaded. About BEACH CLEANS. I recognise the clean up as a hugely important aspect of the plastics awakening & empowering action item for engaging ppl in the movement. And I know that the heavier side of the plastics crisis is further upstream, when the oil is violently pulled from the earth in communities that are poisoned & forgotten. In the manufacture of plastics in poor conditions w/o any regard for the workers’ health/ lungs. The mass distribution of these single-use plastic products as packaging for other products, used & immediately discarded, THEN ending up as beach trash.
When the focus is: the clean up of beaches; I say Yes, And…
“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.”
-Meg Wheatley
Reflection is powerful. Writing things down – words, intentions, dreams and memories is a great exercise at the end of the year to identify what is truly important to you, to shed what isn’t and to look towards transformation in the year ahead.
Heavy rains, flash flooding, communities cut off, animals stranded. The annual flooding in the northern rivers region begins.
But how is this weather pattern impacted or intensified by the warming climate?
La Niña is an expected weather pattern that occurs every couple of years, as a result of variations in ocean temperatures in the equatorial band of the Pacific Ocean. Strong winds blow warm water on the ocean's surface away from South America, across the Pacific Ocean towards Indonesia.

Many folks care deeply about the environment all year long, yet go “back to normal” once the pressure of holiday gift-buying, food-making, house-decorating strikes! Or worse, they identify as environmentalists, but never actually change their behaviour.
You might do a lot for the earth, for reducing your carbon footprint, lessening your personal waste—but you are tempted by the glitter, shiny wrapping, and plastic toys. You indulge with a “just this once” justification and then experience eco-guilt and self shaming. This is known as the “intention action gap” by environmental scientists. (source) The fact is, people think they want to be eco-friendly but few actually take steps to be eco friendly.

Regardless of the good that she has done, we must acknowledge that America’s super power comes from centuries of brutality. Acknowledge is not strong enough, we must act. But first we have to really deeply understand and allow ourselves to feel the horrors of this truth. This helps us draw up the emotion and energy to work for deep, lasting change.

What’s the strategy to budget for bulk OR is the plastic free lifestyle just for the privileged? Of course it’s not.
But how much context can one instagram tip give? And how much does this movement need that extra context to be inclusive and empowering to all communities? Is it enough to sway the privileged purchasing power and social sway to make bulk foods and reusables more affordable and accessible to all? Or is this a perverse colonisation of natural ways of living? With the wealthy donning clay dyed fibres carrying hand sculpted reusable cups.. Or is this an essential part of the global awakening? An exciting turning point in the revolution? The commoditisation of “natural lifestyle” or “eco living” a basic truth about the role of capitalism in our buyer society, and it’s very nature a win in comparison to the wasteful alternative trends? And then, how might we sustain these shifts to be less fleeting and more rooted? Is this our one chance to lock in regenerative systems or is this humanity’s coming of age? Are we in an eco chamber of change or can we build momentum and create the thriving world our hearts know is possible?
Read MoreIn my book I urge folks not to wait to take action. For the pollution on our planet is far beyond what we can ever hope to manage and it is only mounting with the plastics industry planning to almost double their production in the next ten years. So we must act now.
But in this current pandemic. In this culture of fear and anxiety, of separation and isolation, of heightened triggers and sensitivities. Where we watch our skies clear of pollution as the planes are grounded, and the rivers flow clean since tourism halts, and the animals frolic, and nature regrows where so recently trampled thousands of boots. We celebrate these certainly. And I quietly watch the plastic masks, the plastic gloves, the plastic gowns, the plastic wipes, the plastic personal sized hand sanitisers, the plastic to-go food containers—delivered, picked up, discarded, the plastic takeaway cups, the plastic bottles. Plastics emerging as the key to health and hygiene. This synthetic barrier trusted over our own natural instincts and intuitions to protect ourselves. This plastic material clawing its way into every aspect of this pandemic positioned as protection, positioned as saving lives.

At this time, Yogi Matsyendranath shared “before taking to the practices of meditation, the body and its elements need purifying.” He may hear meditation, I hear and am deeply curious about ethics & morality. How is our physical body related to our ability to uphold morals or adhere to our chosen ethics?

Is this pandemic offering a rebirth? Is this pause allowing us the reset so many environmental & social justice advocates have been pushing for? Are we in our separation working through the fear, the discomfort of isolation, our anxieties, & realising what actually matters to us. No longer pulled by the illusions of a sick society or consumption-driven culture, & instead left with what stirs our individual heart & what calls each of our unique souls?

Asia is home to just under 60% of the global population and is notorious for horrific air quality. The World Health Organisation estimates 7 million deaths worldwide per year from air pollution with over two-thirds of these deaths in Asia. With the current global pause on manufacturing and travel, China’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped dramatically overnight.

Objective: Sexy Times Whilst Preventing STDs & Pregnancy
Best Choice: Single-Use CONDOMS
CONDOMS
They are nowhere near perfect. Most are made from synthetic latex which does not biodegrade for hundreds of years, they certainly end up discarded in the environment as trash and endanger wildlife. They are coated in toxic spermicides and made of toxic plastics. They don’t feel as good. They are packaged in wasteful single-use plastic packaging. HOWEVER, they are our best option for preventing pregnancy AND protecting against STD’s.

We see the pollution. We know it's because of the endless plastic packaging. We feel a complete lack of options. Instead of continuing to just accept the single-use plastics that are given to us by businesses we support, people all over the world are creating new systems around refillable and reusable containers. We can support these beneficial systems EVERY DAY by bringing our own containers which will help normalise reuse and refill culture.

In my ten years of plastic freedom, I have learned the difference between aspirational & oppressive change. As we learn about the state of the planet, the pollution, the historically unprecedented off-the-charts melting of glaciers & thawing of permafrost, we are filled with panic. This sense of urgency can motivate us to aggressive tactics. However, if we are trying to inspire behaviour change in another person, this usually has the opposite effect.
